About

Jim Yeater, CFPS and Stephen Dale, P.E. gave an excellent presentation on an injection molding fire they investigated for Cincinnati Insurance Companies.  Included with the presentation was a fantastic video that captured the actual fire event!  From fireball to sprinkler knockdown, attendees were able to analyze the whole explosive process and view occupant response.

Presentation Summary:

Plastic part fabrication via injection molding is an F-1 occupancy per the OBC and an Extra Hazard Group 1 occupancy per NFPA 13.  There are several hazards associated with injection molding, and preventing and controlling fires in these occupancies can be challenging.  This presentation will review the operation and hazards associated with plastic injection molding, discuss minimum protection and suppression requirements, and share information from a recent fire loss in an injection molding plant.  Video of the fire will be shown along with a discussion of lessons learned.
